Conrad Sewell has long been one of the best voices in Australian music and after a fantastic tour with his sister Grace earlier in the year, he has now returned to regional shows around the country with his acoustic tour. After a great set from Ethan Bear, Sewell still started with a bang, opening with some of his biggest hits, with “Changing” being a beautiful start to the set as Sewell showed off his magnificent voice before moving on to “Remind Me”.
Powerful tracks like “Love Me Anyway” and “All Life Long” followed with Sewell showcasing his incredible range in the beautiful nightclub area of the Woodport Hotel, which really was a fantastic venue for this kind of performance with plenty of seated and standing spaces and fantastic acoustics. The more intimate setting also allowed Sewell’s powerful vocals to take centre stage and showed off the richness of his tone.
Sewell was lively in his interactions with the crowd, engaging with everyone and telling very personal stories about his life, his relationship with alcohol and the trajectory of his career. It was a deeply personal performance, with Sewell offering an insight into some of the experiences that have shaped him and his music.
There were also some very well-chosen covers placed throughout the set, with Michael Jackson’s “You Are Not Alone” being one of the highlights. There was also some time for impromptu covers, including “Landslide” in response to a repeated audience request, which Sewell eventually duly obliged with, performing the song a cappella. These moments added to the spontaneity of the evening and demonstrated his ability to connect with the audience.
It was a shame to hear Sewell talk about what he wanted from his previous album, Precious, which is one of his best and as he performed some of the songs, it really showed just how good they are. “Bittersweet” was a particular highlight, with the whole crowd singing along demonstrating just how much affection there is for his music.
Sewell also taught the crowd his new song “Talk to Me”, which they all sang back to him, making for a lovely moment and there was some great previewing of songs from his forthcoming album as well. It’s clear that Sewell thinks really highly of his next work and indeed, the songs came across really well in the venue. He closed out the night with “Start Again” and “Firestone”, which was a really great way to end a beautiful night of music.
Overall, this was a great gig and another reminder of just how good Sewell is. It is really hopeful that with his next album he gets the success that he deserves as he really is up there with the best in the country. In Sewell’s own words, in this next chapter, he is trying to “make the world give a f*** about Conrad Sewell.” This gig was yet another reminder that the world really should give a f*** about Conrad Sewell and that hopefully this is just the start.
