REVIEW: Conrad and Grace Sewell join forces to light up Oxford Art Factory in Sydney

Conrad Sewell is one of the finest vocalists in Australia, with all of the talent in the world and some amazing songs to go with it. Over the years, I’ve seen him play many times and every time, it is an absolute treat. Despite multiple number one hits, there is always a feeling with Sewell that he deserves even more attention than he currently gets and it is definitely something that is not lost on him and his audience but he has still developed a sizeable following, which culminated at the Oxford Art Factory for the last night of his national tour.

From the start, the crowd was buzzing and alive, ready for a wonderful night of music as Conrad was joined for the first time as co-headliner with his sister, Grace, after both rose to fame by hitting number one on the charts in the same week 10 years ago, becoming the first Australian sibling duo to do so as separate acts. Indeed, it was Grace who kicked off the night, singing her brother’s “Firestone” before he joined her on stage in what was a dramatic but exciting start to the night.

Sewell was nursing quite a serious cold and this did limit his vocals at points but the energy was sky high and it meant that it mattered very little in the scheme of the concert. He followed his opener up with the punchy and energetic “God Save the Queen” before moving into the uptempo “Who You Lovin” and then the ballads “Remind Me” and “Start Again”. It was a great start to the night and although the Conrad portion of the night did feel a little short (with one song cut due to his illness), it still allowed the crowd to hear some of the singer’s biggest hits, which he still performed exceptionally well with the beautiful rich tone he has even despite his illness.

Then it was time for Grace to take to the stage and she performed a lot of very introspective songs, showing off a rich, soulful voice, with tracks like “How to Love Me” and “Tell Mum I Love Her”, which really moved the audience. Conrad then joined Grace after a Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson medley before performing Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s “Rein Me In”, which they executed very well, with the track showing off the strengths in both their voices and they really seemed to be having great fun together. After some more solo songs by Grace, Conrad performed an unreleased song that he wrote about his sister, leaving her in tears with a quite beautiful song and a really poignant moment. There were plenty of moments of banter during the show, with the siblings playfully chastising each other for missing entries and similar things, but there was so much love and warmth on stage that it really shone through, creating a really special feeling in the room. The night was closed out with “You Don’t Own Me”, which took Grace to number one 10 years ago, before they finished with “Healing Hands”.

Overall, this was a really great show which allowed the audience to see two extremely talented vocalists perform their craft. It’s extraordinary to think that so much talent can come from the same family, and the energy in the room was really high, with the Oxford Art Factory proving to be a perfect venue. Last time I saw Conrad Sewell, it was at the Dee Why Hotel and it was a bit of a shame as not many people had turned out, but this time there was a whole crowd rearing and ready to go and the fact that Grace was there as well meant that everyone really left having a blast. While Conrad was clearly battling illness, it didn’t dampen the vibes at all, with the night feeling like a really joyous and special occasion. A great night at the Oxford Art Factory.
