REVIEW: Peach PRC launches new material in Australian homecoming

Peach PRC has become one of Australia’s most loved music exports, with her unique sound and presence engaging audiences all around the world, especially on social media platforms like TikTok. For her first shows in Australia in two years, Peach PRC returned to Sydney with a gig at Hordern Pavilion, which felt like quite a step up from her last show at Enmore Theatre. The venue was not packed, with two of the seating areas cordoned off, but there was still a healthy crowd in attendance despite the very late start time of 9:30pm on a Sunday night which did feel like an odd choice for this show.

Fans may also have been in for a bit of a surprise when looking at the setlist, with the vast majority of tracks coming from her currently unreleased Porcelain album and only a few prior hits scattered throughout. This created a unique atmosphere, as it felt like for a number of songs the audience was discovering the tracks as the singer was playing them although, as Peach PRC said multiple times on stage, a number of them had been teased in viral TikToks so it wasn’t a complete lack of familiarity.

The Aussie star started off her set with “Piper,” which was a lively and energetic beginning as she showed off her incredible core strength with a pole routine to kick off the show before moving on to “Oasis” and “Celebrity Crush,” which were also off the new album. From the moment Peach PRC took to the stage, the parallels to Chappell Roan were immediately apparent, with the staging, the setup, the presence and even the vocals and music being very similar in style. This was great to see, as this is clearly the lane that Peach PRC has made for herself and she executed it well.

Interestingly, probably the best song off the new album was the very Lady Gaga sounding “Miss Erotica,” which had the crowd dancing and enjoying themselves as Peach introduced the track. With that said, there was a noticeable sense of bemusement from some of the audience at how few songs they already knew, particularly when Peach PRC said before “Perfect for You” that “this is a song that you’ll know.” In a way, this felt emblematic of the concert, as it seemed that a lot of people were slightly confused by the choice of songs in the setlist. In this respect, the show really could have been marketed as an album release show rather than a standard tour, especially given that many of the songs were unreleased as this would have made it much clear for fans.

When she did play her earlier tracks, she reimagined them, with a highlight being a stripped-back version of “God Is a Freak,” which she described as how she would release the song now if it were one of her newer tracks. This definitely captivated the crowd, as they all sang along to the hit, perhaps wondering why more of Peach’s impressive discography was not also included. A particularly quirky moment came when she performed “Colourblind” with support from a eucalyptus plant, relying on the frequencies of the plant, which was a unique way of providing a different angle to her set.

“F**k, it’s fun out here,” Peach said. “You guys are a fun crowd.”

Vocally, Peach seemed strong, although it was somewhat hard to tell with heavy layers of auto-tune and backing vocals, meaning it was difficult to fully isolate her real voice. That said, her dancing, complete with two excellent backup dancers, was superb. After a few more new songs, Peach closed with an encore of “Blondes,” “Josh” and “Like a Girl Does,” which did feel a little like lip service to her older hits but still left the crowd on a high.

Overall, this was an interesting show that showcased Peach PRC’s new music for her fans. While the new album is promising and there are a lot of good things about it, the fact that it wasn’t released before the show meant that the atmosphere was slightly subdued which was perhaps not what one would expect at a Peach PRC concert. The hits were great and many of the new songs were strong too but it just felt like the audience needed a little more context to truly appreciate everything about the show.
