REVIEW: G Flip makes Australia proud with spectacular show

G Flip has become one of the biggest names in Australian music as they have only gained in fans and exposure over the last few years with their incredible instrumentals and great vocals. Reflecting their popularity, for this tour, they booked two dates at the Hordern Pavilion with both nights sold out, which places them in the true upper echelons of Australian commercial talent.

The crowd was teeming with pink and glitter to mark the occasion, with a joyous atmosphere in the venue. The Beaches opened for G Flip and gave a great rocking start to the night with their song “Blame Brett” being the highlight of their set. It was an energetic set and one that definitely had the crowd ready for their headliner.

G Flip took to the stage for the upbeat “Disco Cowgirl” before moving into their huge hit “Gay 4 Me”, which had the whole audience up on their feet and singing along. G Flip showed exceptional vocals from the start of the show with incredible vocal control and great tone as they moved around the stage. It was after “Good Enough” that they showcased the skill that launched them into stardom as they hopped behind the drum kit for a riotous drum solo with a drummer either side of them in support. It was the first true display of their incredible instrumental skill on the night and certainly not the last. The Australian also showed great charisma, with a great presence and some trademark humour to keep the crowd entertained.

“Take a deep breath in and out,” they said. “That was for me because I’m s*** scared to pay this saxophone for you.”

After a passionate performance of “Rough” they moved into a superb cover of Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” for which they moved back behind the drum kit, which provided a real point of difference and uniqueness about their performance as compared to the original. A surprise for the audience on the night came when G Flip brought out Keli Holiday to relive their ARIAs duet of “Dancing2. The crowd were having a great time as Holiday embraced his newfound cult hero status with his infamous dance while G Flip performed exceptionally on the saxophone with a great solo. It was a slightly tongue in cheek performance but one the crowd very much enjoyed as it brought a different energy to the night.

G Flip had incredible control over the audience throughout the night. They mentioned at the start that they had six rules for their concerts, which the audience abided by for the show and, at one point, when someone fainted, they completely brought the crowd to silence and had them bringing up their hands in the air to resemble an emu. It was an incredibly respectful crowd and G Flip did an incredible job of commanding them to the point where when another person fainted during the break between the encore and the main set, the crowd hushed to silence and did emu gestures to draw attention to the person, for which G Flip was incredibly grateful from backstage. It was also worth noting how inclusive G Flip was welcoming anyone who came to the show solo and encouraging everyone to celebrate their differences, which was incredibly well-received by the grateful audience. When they thanked the crowd, it felt incredibly genuine and the love was certainly reciprocated.

“Thank you so much for giving me your time and your energy,” they said. “Thank you for supporting me and making my dreams come true.”

After a medley of some of their greatest hits, G Flip performed an acoustic version of “Let’s Take This Show On The Road” for their wife before continuing with “Lover” and “Be Your Man”. A duet of “Lez Go” with The Beaches followed before closing out the main set with “Bed on Fire”. Through the set, they showed incredible skill behind the drums on the saxophone and on the guitar, with mastery of all these instruments being quite the feat. It was so clear just how good G Flip is as an instrumentalist and as a songwriter (not to mention their incredible vocals and movement around the stage). It really was a complete performance and a special one for Australians to witness. They returned for an encore of “The Worst Person Alive” and “In Another Life”, which was a great way to close out a wonderful set of music.

Overall, this was a sublime concert really showing off the best of G Flip and of Australian music. They had total command of the stage and their audience and showed amazing instrumental skills along with great vocals. It is always a source of pride when an Australian does so well in concert and it really felt like this was the case in this performance, with G Flip completely winning over the crowd, in the way that top-tier international artists would. It would be quite shocking if, when G Flip next comes to Australia, we are not all heading to Homebush as their live show is incredible and their performing is second-to-none. An incredible night of music at the Hordern Pavilion.
