Leon Bridges is a performer that immediately evokes a level of ethereality when his name is mentioned. His music has a soothing quality to it, but with a funk and groove that brings people in and takes them to a new place.
Given the magnitude of Bridges’ following globally, it was no surprise to see the Sidney Myer Music Bowl filled to the brim, with the audience pressing as close to the stage as possible to get the best view of Bridges and his band. The night was cold, with a hint of rain in the air so the fact that the mood was so positive was a testament to the hype that Bridges had brought to Australia.
As Bridges entered the stage, the vast array of musical influences that have shaped his career became quite apparent. Hailing from Texas, the singer blends R&B and gospel influences with modern-day funk, country and soul, allowing for an eclectic and diverse live performance. His discography also reflects the transition of his sound through these influences so it was fantastic to hear songs from throughout his journey which charted his evolution as an artist for all to see.
Starting with “When a Man Cries” and moving into “Panther City”, he had the audience in a groove from the start, with the dulcet tones of his voice carrying well through the Music Bowl. While the shape of the venue meant that from some angles it was hard to see Bridges, the screens around the Music Bowl meant that this was not such a problem.
The early part of the set also provided an opportunity for Bridges to showcase the strength of his band, which complimented him very well, and was more prominent in some of his newer material.
After showcasing his latest album, Bridges circled around to some of his biggest hits, with “Coming Home”, which Bridges described as the first song that he ever wrote, lighting up the crowd. Bridges sung with a passion and connection that allowed the audience into his world and they responded by following him with every word. Bridges’ vocals were light and sensitive but had enough body and grit to carry through the venue and overpower the chants of the crowd as they embraced the music.
Bridges presented as a soft-spoken performer, interacting very little with the crowd throughout the set and letting the music drive the atmosphere. While this allowed for an even more varied musical showcase, a little more interaction with the audience would have perhaps been welcome.
As he finished “Coming Home”, Bridges grabbed his guitar and moved into “That’s What I Love”, highlighting his skill and versatility as a musician as he transitioned seamlessly through genres and eras.
After a gorgeous performance of “Texas Sun”, Bridges moved into the ballads section of his set with “Can’t Have It All” being particularly well received by the audience, even as the rain started to seep in and a cold breeze moved through the air.
Soon after followed a stripped-back performance of “River”, which had a heavily gospel-tinged sound. It was a highlight of the night, with the crowd singing along as Bridges’ soulful and smooth tone was transfused with an edge of grit which allowed the sound to permeate through the night air. It was the moment the crowd had been waiting for and it didn’t disappoint.
Despite the cold, most of the crowd stayed for the encore and were treated to performances of “Lisa Sawyer” and “Beyond” by Bridges and his band. It was a strong ending, providing a seamless end to the night as Bridges crooned to the crowd who had been with him for the past 90 minutes.
Overall, this was a superb performance, with Bridges showcasing musicality of the highest order as well as a varied set which resonated with the audience who had joined Bridges at various points in his journey and sonic evolution. While greater connection and interaction with the crowd would have been welcome, the music more than made up for it, with Bridges and his band delivering on every number. It will be interesting to see where Bridges transitions to from here in his musical journey, but it is clear that his loyal legion of Australian fans will continue to follow him in whichever direction he goes.
