If there is one thing about Lauren Daigle that is immediately apparent when watching one of her shows, it is her infectious positivity. As she came out onto the stage at the ICC Sydney Theatre, there was a warmth and positivity from the audience that was felt throughout the room. Given Daigle’s space within the faith-based music industry, there was a strong feeling of spirituality in the theatre, with people of all ages including very young children in the audience, all to feel connection with Daigle’s music and messages.
It is easy to forget just how many massive hits Daigle has had in a very short space of time. From the start of the setlist, she played some of her biggest hits including “Look Up Child” and “Rescue.” Between most songs, Daigle soliloquised about various thoughts, both related to the songs and not. Among the most memorable discussions were those that were youth-focussed, with lengthy musings about youth mental health and dealing with divorce and loss. These messages were genuine and powerful and were well-received by the audience.
These messages also had the benefit of facilitating greater connection to Daigle’s music, which was sublime. She has a lightness to her voice which is so pleasing to listen to, but this is combined with a huge amount of control and power. This results in a tone not dissimilar to Adele and Kelly Clarkson but with the fragility of Birdy or Sara Bareilles.
This was most apparent during her performance of one of her newer singles, “Thank God I Do”, which is a truly gorgeous song. Daigle performed it with a sensitivity and vulnerability which harnessed the beauty of the number and allowed the audience to truly connect. Most of the audience was singing along, either through a vocal call and response style or lightly under their breath. Either way, it was clear the song connected with almost everyone in the room and that many were truly touched by the strength of the song and of the performance. It was a moment of magic.
As Daigle moved through her setlist, she began to highlight the members of her band who were absolutely extraordinary. In particular, her saxophonist and backing vocalist were out of this world in their execution but all of them played together in perfect harmony to enhance Daigle’s performance (with the occasional virtuosic solo when the time was right). Travelling to New Orleans last year was one of the most exciting and enriching musical experiences I have ever had and watching Daigle, who hails from the state, and her band play, it felt as if the Louisianan spirit had been transported to the ICC stage.
Daigle closed out the set with her biggest hit “You Say” which felt triumphant in the circumstances of the concert. The whole crowd was singing along with joy, creating a wonderful buzz around the theatre. She then moved into some recitative prayers to see out the night, ending a fabulous set of warmth, positivity and great music. Daigle is a magnificent performer in complete control of her craft, and it was an absolute pleasure to see her perform. One can only hope she returns to Australia soon.
