J Balvin is one of the biggest names out there in the world of Reggaeton music. A blend of R&B and hip-hop originating in Puerto Rico in the 90s, the genre has found a legion of fans all around the world and few are more recognisable in the space than Balvin, who has sold over 35 million records worldwide.
After playing a tour headlined by an appearance at Splendour in the Grass last year, Balvin has returned to Australia for another stadium tour. The Qudos Bank Arena is filled with ardent fans of both Balvin and the Reggaeton genre, and erupt as he hits the stage.
Balvin begins his setlist with arguably his biggest hit “Mi Gente” which sets the crowd off from the very start of the show, as he bounces around the stage filling in his parts of the song. He moves through hit after hit, in a lengthy setlist (although he only sings snippets of some songs). While most of the crowd is Spanish speaking (and Balvin speaks to them a lot in Spanish), Balvin makes an effort to ensure that everyone in the audience feels included and engaged, interacting with the crowd regularly.
Balvin’s energy is strong from the start of the set, and is reinforced by his band and backup dancers who are absolutely superb. The skill on display is phenomenal even if some of the dance routines push the boundaries a little too far.
The crowd, although sparser than expected, are knowledgeable about the artist and the genre and love every moment that Balvin is on stage. At times, the energy drops when the alien theme overshadows the music (which feels a little unnecessary) but Balvin always brings them back with engaging narrative and connection in between songs.
Joining Balvin for support is SOFI TUKKER who provide able support to the headliner with a strong set. The music is perfect for hyping the crowd for Balvin and getting the energy right as the night progresses. The music is slightly unusual but the entertainment value is high and it will be interesting to see more of them over the coming years.
Overall, this is a show all about entertainment value and it certainly brings that. While Balvin’s singing can be a little light at times, he brings an energy to the stage which radiates through the audience. Balvin’s fans are loyal and there is no doubt that all left this concert as happy and joyous as can be.
